Shopify First Store Checklist

Launching a first Shopify store is less about finding a perfect theme and more about removing friction from the buying journey. Use this practical checklist to move from idea to a trustworthy, testable storefront without missing the essentials.

Before you build: define the offer

Write one sentence that explains who the product is for, what problem it solves, and why it is worth buying now. Choose a store name that is easy to say and spell, then confirm the domain and social handles are available. Keep the first catalog focused: a small, coherent collection is easier to merchandise, support, and learn from than dozens of untested products.

Trust, payments, and measurement

Connect a payment method, set tax and shipping rules, explain delivery windows, and decide how refunds and customer support will work. Show real contact details, FAQs, reviews when available, and policies that match the business you can actually deliver. Connect analytics, define one primary conversion, add UTM tags to campaigns, and record a baseline for visits, add-to-cart, checkout, and purchase.

Product pages that convert without hype

Lead with the outcome customers want, then support it with specifics. A useful product page answers: What is it? Who is it for? What is included? How quickly will it arrive? What happens if it is not right? Use descriptive image alt text, show scale where relevant, and keep the Buy button visible on smaller screens. Avoid claims you cannot substantiate.

Run a complete test order

  • Open the store in a private window on both phone and desktop.
  • Search or browse to a product, select a variant, and add it to cart.
  • Complete checkout with test mode or a controlled real order.
  • Confirm taxes, shipping, confirmation email, inventory, fulfillment notification, and refund flow.
  • Check that analytics records key events without duplicate tracking.

Launch week operating plan

Invite a small group of testers before announcing widely. Ask them to complete a purchase and describe where they hesitated. Fix broken links and checkout friction first, then review support questions and funnel data weekly for the first month.
